MFC 2024 wrap up

September 17, 2024 by Bill

Well, 2024 MFC is history but they were the BEST camps ever! We’ve already started working on 2025 and registration will start soon after the beginning of the year. Here are a few notes and pictures from the 2024 Camps:

The June Camps were the first MFC camps after winter storms took down a lot of trees in camp and prompted NEOFA to take down a lot more. MFC had to take over a bunch of the cleanup but with a ton of volunteer help, we did it. This and an extreme heat wave with heat indices over 100 degrees (and with less shade) made Camp a challenge at times but all in all they were a smashing success!

The August 2024 Fiddle Camps, both full with close to 300 campers, have come and gone and, get this…, they were the best ever! Campers are getting used to the changes at NEOFA, and while the campus doesn’t look the same from all viewpoints, the spirit of Maine Fiddle Camp has not only survived, but flourished! We had some wet days, we had some hot days, but by and large the weather cooperated. As far as “extraterrestrial weather” is concerned, we had a meteor shower (every year on August 12) and an Aurora Borealis display (most likely during peak of the solar cycle which is NOW!) this August. It’s always something at Maine Fiddle Camp, right?

Of course, we still offer twice the program at half the price at Maine Fiddle Camp. In addition to instruction in 14 instruments for all ages and experience levels, there’s jamming, dancing, singing, concerts, great food.

Finally, here are a few short videos from August 2024:

Helen, Sammy, Adelaide and others jam in the Cello Barn
Jazz combo – Helen, Pranav, Aidan, Sammy and Neil.  Pranav sings, “Isn’t This a Lovely Day”, written by Irving Berlin. Check out this combo, certainly arranged ‘on the spot’, typical of what you might see at Fiddle Camp: 3 second generation staff members, one new young staff member and a camper.
“Ba Beebles” – nuff sed Jeff and Aidan reprise the role
Hula Hoop Fiddling. Amelia and Adelaide Morgan, and Emilie Carrol. The three of them seem to have mastered this amazing skill quite well. The two guys, … Well,.. not so much!
