Klappvalsen, ”the clap waltz” is a more modern tune and it’s written by a great fiddler, Mats Edén from the county Värmland in Sweden. The county borders Norway, and Norway and Sweden share many of the musical and dance traditions found in the area. 

Later on Patrik Rydman has written lyrics for this tune. 

These days Klappvalsen is a well known tune around Sweden. It’s a good one to know when you visit festivals and stämmor here.

Björnlåten

Björnlåten is from the village Marsvik, Vilhelmina. Vilhelmina is the northwest county in Sweden. 

I talked to the woman, Siv Burman who collected this tune in the 80s and when we talked about the name of the tune, Björnlåten which means “the bear tune”, she said it’s probably got the name cause the music reminds you of a bear coming through the woods. There are definitely bear around Marsvik that could have inspired the fiddlers!

Having Bob Mac at MFC was at real treat, and I’ll never forget the image of his van parked right next to the Main Tent. Piano has always been an important part of MFC and so crucial for playing for dances and accompanying fiddle tunes. I was one of many he honored by composing a tune in their name, and I am so happy I was able to keep track of this scrap of sheet music paper he trust into my hand as he was leaving camp for the last time back in 2008, and I want to share it with the community, so give it a try! -Doug
